REACH

The Stahlwerk Bous GmbH has complied with the obligation of registering as a manufacturer of substances, preparations and articles under the REACH-Regulation.

The European Community Regulation on chemicals and their safe use REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation and Restriction of Chemicals, EC 1907/2006) entered into its force on 1 June 2007.

The Regulation aims at manufacturers and importers of substances in a quantity of a tonne in weight or above.

The core point of REACH is the obligation to register the information on the properties of the chemical substances in a central database run by the European Chemicals Agency (ECHA) in Helsinki. “No data, no sale” is said in the REACH-regulation, meaning manufacturing or importing of substances after the 2nd of December 2008 is strictly forbidden if the substances have not been pre-registered.

So called “downstream users” have to make sure their usage of the substances have also been taken into account at pre-registration.

The REACH regulation puts the obligation to pass the relevant information up and down the supply chain into the hands of each and every manufacturer and importer.

Metals and metal compositions, i.e. steel and EAF-slag as well as other by-products of the iron and steel manufacturing process will fall under the new REACH regulation.

Waste is specifically exempted.

The registration of the substances will take part in 2 steps, first the pre-registration and afterwards the registration, which will both be the obligation of manufacturers and importers.

There is a general obligation for manufacturers and importers of substances to submit a registration to the Agency for each substance manufactured or imported in quantities of 1 tonne or above per year. Exemptions are contained in Annexes IV and V of the REACH Regulation.

The pre-registration period commences at the 1st of June 2008 and runs until the 1st of December 2008. The European Chemicals Agency will then publish all pre-registered substances on their website from the 1st of January 2009.

The registration itself has to take part, depending on the produced quantities and tonnage range, until the 1st of December either in 2009, 2013 or 2018.

Leastwise information will be put together in a “technical dossier” and transmitted to the ECHA.

We will supply brief general descriptions of uses in our chemical safety assessment sheet, as far as they are known to us. The information will be passed on to our customers for examination of their usage. As our customer we would kindly ask you to refrain from submitting information on your usage.

For the manufacturing of our products we require also substances, preparations and articles of other manufacturers. We will therefore get in touch with our suppliers to ensure that our usage will be taken into account in the registration of their substances.

You will be supplied with further information regarding the implementation of the REACH-Regulation by the Stahlwerk Bous GmbH by contacting the E-Mail address.
