History

The Bous/Saar location is not unknown in the mining industry. As early as 1886, seamless pipes were rolled there using the Mannesmann-type pilger mill process. The Bous plant – formerly Mannesmannröhren-Walzwerk AG – can claim to have serially manufactured the first saleable seamless pipes.

In order to ensure the supply of high-quality steel to its own rolling mill, an electric steel plant was put into operation in 1961. Continuously developed during the 1970s, the steel plant today avails of a 70-tonne EBT rotary current arc furnace which is equipped with numerous technical features such as a self-learning electrode regulation device with artificial intelligence. This also put us in a position to supply other pipe manufacturing plants, such as Mannesmann Röhrenwerke in Rath and Reisholz and British Steel in Bromford/GB, with preliminary materials. The vacuum degasing plant went into operation in 1992 which considerably improved the purity of steel grades produced. A new ladle furnace was put into operation in October 2005 in order to optimise the area of secondary metallurgy and improve flexibility. The steel mill in Bous has been producing preliminary pipe material and ingots for forges all over Europe since 1994.

Georgsmarienhütte Holding GmbH acquired the Saarland-based company in 1998. Since then, Stahlwerk Bous GmbH has been an independent subsidiary of the holding in the Steel division.
